Synopsis
Hedgehog tries to get her broom back.
Description
Hall of Mooms' premise is that Hedgehog is finally able to own her own broom, which she can use to fly. After ?Susie gives Hedgehog a map and a broom order paper, Susie tells Hedgehog to meet the ?Broommaker so that she can get her broom.
Bringing Oscar with her, she heads off, arriving at the Broommaker's workshop. She's very afraid afraid of the Broommaker at first, but she soon realises that he seems to be very gentle. Before beginning the fitting process, Hedgehog admits to him that she doesn't know what kind of broom her mother used. He then explains that magical traits are passed through one's matriarch, and knowing one's mother's magical traits could help speed up a broom fitting. However, he heavily enjoys the fitting process.
When inside, the Broommaker explains that flying (on a broom) is all about cosmic balance, and as such, the type of wood used for the broom should compliment one's personality. After taking Hedgehog's measurements, it's revealed that she's "particularly hard-shelled," and so she needs very soft wood. The Broommaker then steps into Hedgehog's family tree forest to collect wood for her broom. Once he comes out, he tells Hedgehog that her family tree hasn't been touched in a couple of generations, meaning she's been the first witch in her family for a while.
After half an hour, Hedgehog, Oscar, and the Broommaker arrive at the testing block, a location suited for first-time flying. As Hedgehog gets onto her broom, she naturally goes into a hunched position, though she doesn't know why. When she tries to fly, she ends up hitting her face on the ground due to her bad posture. After the Broommaker comes to help, he finds out she has a "fearver of a 101 Dull Mooshions,"[sic] meaning she's incredibly scared to fly. This fear is inherited from her mom, who inherits it from her own mom, so on and so forth. This lineage of moms is called a moom.
The Broommaker then goes on to tell Hedgehog about an old story named "The Chicken Leg Story," providing insight into why Hedgehog may have her fear: Hedgehog's mooms were taught down generations that one should be in a hunched position (similar to the one Hedgehog had) when riding a broom. The only reason they'd know why is because it's how their mothers taught them, and so to find the root cause, one must find the very first mother who taught that way.
Hedgehog then has to visit the Hall of Mooms, a place where all of her female ancestors reside. In there, she finds ?her mom, who's talking over a telephone to a school administrator. Hedgehog comes up to her and asks for her to get on her broom. When her mom gets on, she goes into a hunched position. When asked why, she says that it simply feels safest. Hedgehog then asks her great grandmother, Esther, to get on the broom, and she goes into a hunched position as well. Down 3 generations, the hunched flying position stays, with seemingly no beginning to this awkward stance.
Hedgehog and Oscar eventually see a moom unlike the others, away from everyone, in a large room. She's seen to have long red hair, a dark blue dress, a wreath worn as a crown, and is holding a gold amulet with what seems to be either a crescent moon or a bell on it. When asked to get on Hedgehog's broom, she hunches once more. However, when asked why, she explains that she needs to because her hair is red, and if she flew sitting up, she would be easily spotted by witch hunters. After Hedgehog realises that she doesn't need to be afraid of witch hunters, she's transported back to the testing block to try to fly again.
She tries to fly again, this time sitting up, and does so exceptionally. The Broommaker allows Hedgehog to fly home, Oscar on the back of Hedgehog's broom. As she flies home, her mooms are seen flying beside and behind her, all of them now sitting up.
