Synopsis

Oscar confronts an age-old superstition.

Description

The 9 a.m. Local Firefighter's Breakfast is delayed to a 10 a.m. brunch because of Susie's bad hair day. This sets off Oscar's anxiety because he has a superstition about not eating breakfast before 9:30 a.m, and he goes to hide in a cubby in the wall. He sees Spider there, who validates his superstition and tells Oscar about his own superstitions, which keep him cubby-bound almost always. Oscar leaves and decides to face his fear lest he end up housebound like Spider. He and Hedgehog head to ?Heartforde for the brunch and he is nearly hit by a football and then a tree branch. At the brunch, Alexa asks Oscar and Hedgehog if they want to cut to the front of the line (to apologise for almost nailing them with the football) and Susie allows it, saying she has deep respect for queue jumpers. The two high five at Oscar beating his superstition, and the superstition is transferred to Hedgehog through the gesture. She spills syrup all over her sweater and brushes it off, only to have several pine cones fall on her head right after. When ?Boy Band shows up to sing for the firefighters, Hedgehog rips a massive fart and is called out by the band, which convinces her that the superstition was real and she caught it.

She and Oscar run away from the brunch and she falls in a hole while trying to figure out the rules of the superstition. She decides they need witch help and they consult Betsy, who confirms that Hedgehog caught the superstition. Betsy initiates a spell to make the superstition (a magical being just like the rest of them) visible, and tells Oscar to name him. He names his superstition Gerald. They chant the name until he appears on Hedgehog's head. Betsy tells Oscar that to get rid of him, he just has to schmooze the superstition with a fancy dinner and ask nicely.

Hedgehog and Betsy set up the fancy dinner, including a frog waiter in a bowtie. Oscar is awkward at the dinner and, not knowing how to deal with Gerald's many compulsions, gets impatient and shouts at him before asking him to leave. Gerald refuses, saying Oscar is being rude. Oscar deals an ultimatum saying if Gerald doesn't leave before 8:15 p.m, something bad will happen to him. Gerald can only worry about how time zones affect that, causing Oscar to shout again before he has an epiphany. He realises he got Gerald when his ?Great-Aunt Marianne yelled at him to eat his breakfast by 9:30 or something bad would happen to him. He recognises that his aunt was just trying to hurry him up because she was impatient and had her own agenda, and the superstition was a tool he developed to avoid getting yelled at in the morning. He says he can let the scary and not-scary live together and lets Gerald stay in the cubby with Spider. The two seem to get along well together as roommates.
