Synopsis

Oscar finds and cares for a magical root from Susie's yard.

Description

Susie telepathically invades Oscar's mind to have him check if she left her oven on while she's off the island on business. She tells him not to mess with anything else. Oscar thanks her for trusting him and she shuts it down saying he simply has the most telepathically intrudable mind. He checks and her oven was off, but he finds a toothpaste he presumes to be dead on the floor and takes it to the yard to bury it. The toothpaste wakes up and says she was just napping, but in the grave hole Oscar finds a little root boy named Jeremiah. Oscar starts caring for him until he's exhausted and leaves for the night.

Oscar sleeps until lunch. Hedgehog realises Lucy is sick and starts taking care of her. That evening a tired Oscar goes back to Susie's cabin to check on Jeremiah. Hedgehog meets him and tells him that some of the other campers have come down with something, and he says he thought Jeremiah was tiring him out and that maybe he's sick, too. She meets Jeremiah and is mildly grossed out by his dirtiness, but is distracted by Lucy calling her on the walkie talkie for juice and leaves again.

On the way to the Mess Hall the next morning, Hedgehog sees everyone else's windows are open and says she's glad she runs cold. However, when she gets to there she realises everyone else has gotten sick except Lem. She's quickly swamped by sick campers demanding she bring them liquids and decongestants. Eventually, she gets back to Susie's to check on Oscar. He's very sick (his eyes are too tired to focus) and holding Jeremiah across his lap, even though he has grown to almost the same size. Hedgehog is suspicious now.

That night, Hedgehog stakes out Susie's cabin and catches Jeremiah sneaking into Lem and Alexa's cabin. She sees him place a hand on Lem's cheek and steal her energy, making her sick and him grow a size. Hedgehog gasps and runs, but Jeremiah hears her and beats her back to Susie's cabin, where he has Oscar tied up upside down in a tree and threatens to suck all the energy out of him. He says he's seeking revenge on Susie for burying him and is sucking energy from the campers and island to do it. He picks up Hedgehog and says he'll drain her dry but Oscar uses his dad voice to count to 3, making Jeremiah obey and put Hedgehog back down. Just then Susie comes back home and makes Jeremiah small again. She explains Jeremiah is an energy-stealing mandrake, and Oscar taking him out of the ground early resulted in attitude problems. Oscar still feels attached to Jeremiah, saying that he should have raised him better. Susie lets Oscar come and visit Jeremiah, and puts down a sign warning Oscar to not touch Jeremiah, or else the catastrophe would repeat again.
