Synopsis

Hedgehog tries to get over a crush so she can regain her focus on magic.

Description

The episode starts with Hedgehog practicing magic so that she can get her wand. As she enters her cabin, she's jumpscared by Oscar and Max who are completely pruned up. Oscar tells her that this happened to them because they stayed in the pool for too long, and Hedgehog agrees to fix them with a magic spell. The magic spell includes holding the hand of the person you have to fix, Hedgehog holds Oscar's hand without any hesitation, but when it's Max's turn and she has to hold his hand, she screams and drops the potion. Oscar ponders why she couldn't do the spell on Max, and felt physical symptoms from Hedgehog that normally imply sickness. Oscar gets concerned for her health, and Hedgehog uses it as an excuse for Oscar and Max to leave. They both then go back to the pool.

Half of the episode passes with Hedgehog trying to avoid Max so that she can focus on her magic and get her wand. She also visits Barb, and Barb gives her a piece of paper describing how Hedgehog can forget about Max. However, in order to do this she will have to tell Max that she has a crush on him, and she changed her mind about telling him.

During her magic test, Betsy tells Hedgehog that Oscar is not going to be her test subject anymore because his mum's concerned that he'll catch the flu around Hedgehog. When Betsy calls out Max, Hedgehog's face expression changes. She is then assigned to change Max's hat's colour but she is too nervous to go near him. She turns his nose really small by mistake, and after a bit of a time she confesses to Max about her crush.

Max tells her that he also thinks she's really cool, and smart and one of his best friends but doesn't like her in that way. Hedgehog becomes sad and sits down far away to cry in her book. Betsy then confronts her that this stuff comes and goes, and Hedgehog finally gets the courage to turn Max's hat's colour into some other colour. The episode ends with Oscar saying "I...can't believe it. Hedgehog liked Max. This whole time? I can't wait to tell my mom".

Trivia

  • This is the first episode where ?Asher Bishop voices Oscar.
  • It is unknown if Max became even more pruny after going back to the pool.
  • This episode's title is a quadruple entendre, with "Spell Crushers" referring to Hedgehog(the spellcaster who has a crush), the crush(that is the crusher of doing the spells correctly), Max(the crush that affected the spells), and Hedgehog acing her spell exam in the end(crushing it).
  • Betsy leaves the practice exam in a mini helicopter after it's successfully completed by Hedgehog.

Continuity

  • Hedgehog tries to avoid Max for the whole episode because she has a crush on him. It was first revealed in the episode Campers Above the Bed.
    • This is a nod to ?the pilot, wherein Hedgehog not only has an obvious crush on Max, but also has her feelings reciprocated by him. Although that's not the case in the main series.
  • The Library is a continuation to this episode.
  • The heartbreak that Hedgehog goes through is not completely resolved, with it resulting in her being obsessed with magic to gain power in subsequent episodes.

Cultural References

  • This episode is loosely a spoof of Oscars-winning 1996 romance film, The English Patient and 1988 fantasy film, Willow.
    • Betsy, when she was in snake form, is a reference to Fin Raziel.
    • Hedgehog having a crush on Max, is a reference to the character Sorsha, who falls in love with Madmartigan.
