Synopsis

Susie and Ramona teach the witches how to make spirit balls.

Description

10 years before Betsy arrives on the island, Susie is instructing her class on making Spirit Balls, a device used to catch ghosts, She pairs Mallory with Emma, despite them both being "individuals" and not wanting any group work. Emma ignores Mallory and leads her down a forest path as Mallory follows and questions Emma about their assignment. Emma never responds and eventually Mallory gets stuck in a tree when she tries to follow through a passage too small. Emma uses a vine to make Mallory sneeze, dislodging her. Further down the path it becomes clear all the forest creatures and plants love Emma, and Mallory considers this a mystery and continues questioning her.

Soon the two are called back to class, having done no work on their Spirit Ball. When their turn to present comes, Emma gives the ball to Mallory, who ends up possessed by the spirit of a soggy old log. Susie and Ramona attempt an exercism (removal of a spirit by physical activity) but the Old Log Ghost is heavy and stiff, unable to exercise, and taking stronger hold of Mallory. Just when it seems the Old Log has Mallory for good, Emma tickles her nose with a vine from the skylight, making her sneeze. This dislodges the ghost, who Emma collects with a magical syringe. Ramona tells Emma they'd almost forgotten about the lost art of sneezercism and Susie tells her to go catch that spirit.

Emma leaves them hanging and goes to her seemingly secret forest home (just beyond the opening Mallory got stuck in earlier) where she releases the Old Log Ghost into a magical contraption which directs it into the body of a withered flower. The flower perks up and exclaims "Emma!"
